History teaches us many things if we pay attention. First, it teaches us that it is destined to repeat itself. Second, it teaches us that we (people) continually fail to pay attention, and learn the lessons and sometimes warnings that it imparts to us. I believe we fail so miserably at learning from history for the following reason.
Everything we do revolves around two things, the desire to gain pleasure, and the desire to avoid pain: in many instances we desire to gain pleasure while simultaneously seeking to avoid pain. I would say that the desire to avoid pain is stronger and whether you agree or not take a closer look and you will see that most human behavior is driven by one or the other of these factors to some degree or another.
Our entire society whether a home or business is completely and utterly dependant upon the uninterrupted distribution or flow of alternating current (ac) electrical power. Our whole way of existence is setup entirely around electricity. Communications, food storage, food preparation, air-conditioning, heating, television, commerce of any type, etc. All of this can be easily and quickly disrupted by the mere flip of a switch. Stop the flow of electricity and the entire house of cards coming tumbling down quickly.
While much of the time our power source seems to flow with little or no major interruptions most of the time it is a very fragile and delicate balancing act that our society has created for itself. I love electricity and all it has to offer just as much as the next person. But I don't think that most people stop to think about how sensitive all of this really is, and how vulnerable we as individuals and a society really are due to our dependence on electricity. Because power outages don't happen all the time and in many instances when they do the power is quickly restored we just go on about our business because we weren't inconvenienced for very long. But when it does go out for a while then we "feel" it. Nevertheless, most of us go about our daily activities never really thinking that the major tumultuous events that can disrupt and interfere with the flow will happen to us, or we think that even if it does they will fix it quickly and "big deal." Not a very wise way to think for a society who's entire existence and very fabric is built around the uninterrupted flow of electricity.
A little history. Let’s take Hurricane Katrina "New Orleans" as an example. This is a large American city (Just One mind you) that suffered at the hands a of terrible major Catastrophe. Power was completely eliminated and gone, wiped out; the whole area was without it. Now look at how long it took to help all those people even with the Government (which was a joke by the way) and all the other massive relief efforts mobilized to assist. Yes, that was a hurricane, and a major event but the point is that things can happen, manmade or natural and we can end up without power for very long and extended periods of time regardless of the efforts taking place to restore it. Lets face it folks, the possibility of another 911 type of incident taking place is very high. One of the best ways to shut down and hurt America is to shut off its power. Just think about it for a moment, this whole nation and all our industry, trucking, fuel delivery systems, food delivery systems, everything is based on electricity and its uninterrupted flow Turn off the switch and we as a people are going to be hurting bad. But for how long is the real question?
Adopting the belief system that this won't happen or can't happen is a very precarious position to put oneself in. The great thing is that there are contingencies available for all of us to thwart this if it does happen. In addition to protecting yourself, and your family it also helps to protect another very critical and delicate factor and that is our environment.
Solar power systems and wind turbine systems have evolved much over the past few years. Systems for residential and businesses are available and being implemented all the time. Basically, no home or business has to go without it. And lets face it folks we only have a limited amount of fossil fuel reserves left on this planet and they are being exhausted at an incredible rate while doing extensive damage to the environment.
Right now there are tax credits and incentives available by the U.S. Dept of Energy and most States to entice and promote the use of solar, wind turbine and energy saving equipment. You can easily check your State Government website for additional information on this subject.
The point is that we don't have to suffer from power interruptions. The World and America in particular must be proactive and take a more forward stance with the implementation of these types of technologies in our homes and businesses. The preservation of our way of life, and quality of life demands that we take initiative. Our environment and limited natural resources are teetering on a precipice right now but many just aren't paying attention, or don't believe it is real. Nevertheless, we have solutions and the question is are we as a nation both individually and collectively going to address these problems head on?
Americans have always proven to be very conscientious and resourceful in these types of situations and we should be blazing a path as an example for the rest of the World to follow. Let’s protect our homes, businesses, family, and friends and ensure our great way of life by taking advantage of the solar, wind turbine, and other products that enhance sustainability. Placing a solar system into your home greatly increases its value, protects you from various potential harm as a result of power outages and helps to preserve your way and our way of living for generations to come. Check into what solar and wind turbine energy can do your for you and all it has to offer. You will probably be very glad you did one day, and history won't repeat itself when trouble comes.
